Philosophy

Apprenticeship has been the backbone of our company since its inception. Every stylist, colorist, and barber behind an Art + Science chair has completed our rigorous advanced apprenticeship before reaching the floor. To cut or color hair with us takes hard work, commitment, and—above all—passion. We are committed to thorough consultations and complete honesty about your hair. Above all, we want to build a strong, lasting relationship with everyone who walks through our door. We also know that we would be nothing without our community. In 2016, we established Hair Cares NFP, our not-for-profit that gives back to underserved people in our community through fashion shows, coat drives, raffles, and more.

Owners

Susan Hurley Hise

started her journey with the beauty industry in 1998 when she attended the Aveda Institute in Minneapolis and the Vidal Sassoon Academy in London. It was her experience in London that made her realize she wanted to become a color specialist and educator and she brought that passion to Art + Science Salons in 2000. Since then, Susan has taken color classes all over the world and used that unique knowledge to innovate the core Art + Science curriculum while also taking a position as the first ever Revlon Professional Brand Education Specialist in the United States. She is a master colorist and became part owner of Art + Science in 2019 where she continues to innovate and elevate the salon experience both behind the chair and behind the scenes. Paul Wilson

has been cutting hair with Art + Science since 1997, when he joined the American Crew All-Star team. He quickly became a managing partner as well as the Global Artistic Director for American Crew. Paul’s education comes from all over the globe—from Toni & Guy to Vidal Sassoon—and he puts it into action as a head educator for our cutting and barbering apprentices. His creative work has been on stages from Rio de Janeiro to Prague to Melbourne, and he has been featured in Salon Today, American Salon, and many other publications. Not only is Paul an incredible artist and master of his craft, his seemingly endless energy and drive set the tone across all three of our locations. Sit in his chair and experience it for yourself — book an appointment today.

Managing Partners

A salon is nothing without its leaders. Our managing partners are stylists/colorists who have not only been with the salon through thick and thin but massively contribute to the daily life. George Accattato has each been behind the chair with Art + Science for more than 20 years. He is a leader of the highest caliber and knows what makes Art + Science truly special.

Educators

In a salon where education is so essential, to become one of our educators is truly an honor and a responsibility. Every one of our educators has proven themselves through both technical and leadership skills as well as business savvy. All have been individually selected to help craft the new generation of Art + Science stylists, barbers and colorists. All of our educators work behind the chair, so they can walk the walk while also talking the talk.

Social Impact

We are dedicated to giving back to the community. In 2016 we formed Hair Cares NFP—a 501(c)3 not-for-profit—to help us raise money for causes near and dear to our hearts. Our biggest annual event is the Art and Soul fundraiser, an evening of fashion, music and giving.

Barbershops

Since the creation of American Crew, we have been dedicated to the art of men’s grooming, and in 2012 we created a barbershop space in each of our full service salons. In 2015, we founded our first standalone Barbershop in Logan Square. Our barbers have been trained by the best men’s specialists, from American Crew All-Stars to Schorem, the Scumbag Barbers of Rotterdam, Wahl and more. At each of our barbershops, both in-salon and standalone, we promise a relaxed environment and the best haircut of your life. Our haircuts are classic barber shapes, and all genders are welcome in our chair.
